A fuel tanker caught fire close to the Otedola Bridge end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Thursday evening, with several vehicles burnt and many people feared dead.
The inferno began when a tanker fully loaded with petroleum product summersaulted and exploded. The massive fire at the expressway following the explosion reportedly caught other vehicles along the ever busy way.
The Lagos State traffic agency, LASTMA, said over 20 vehicles were burnt in the accident.
“A tanker which had break failure loaded with PMS caught fire on the Otedola Bridge INW Berger. The number of vehicles affected is 20+, Traffic Situation is @ a stand still, all
alternative routes advised ATM” the agency said on its Twitter handle.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the story, and it warned road users to avoid the scene of the inferno. The
casualty figures from the ghastly accident are yet to be ascertained.
“A petrol tanker was trying to overtake another vehicle and the petrol laden tank broke off from the back of the vehicle” an eye witness said.
